How a One-Person Design Studio Started Showing Up in AI Search
A composite case study based on patterns from independent freelancers and solo consultants. Shows how a one-person site with no team, no budget and no SEO background can be found in Google and AI results.

The strategy
1. One clear, answer-first services page
The designer had a beautiful portfolio but no page that directly answered "what do you do and who is it for." They added a single services page that opened with a two-sentence answer: what they do, and who they help. Within 8 weeks that page was appearing in Google results for their core service keyword. The lesson: a portfolio is not a services page. Visitors and search engines need a page that says the thing plainly.
2. A short bio that named their expertise
Their About page said "I am passionate about great design" - which says nothing a search engine or AI tool can use. They rewrote it to name their specialism, their years of experience and the types of clients they work with. Google uses author information to judge expertise. So do AI tools when deciding whether to cite a source. Naming what you actually know is not self-promotion - it is how credibility gets established online.
3. Three targeted posts, not twenty generic ones
They stopped trying to publish regularly and instead wrote three posts that answered the exact questions their clients asked before hiring them: "how much does brand identity design cost," "what to prepare before hiring a designer," and "Figma vs Adobe XD for client handoffs." Each one led with a direct answer in the first paragraph. All three now appear in AI Overviews for their respective queries. Volume did not matter. Specificity and answer-first structure did.
4. LinkedIn and Crunchbase as trust anchors
Adding a LinkedIn profile with their website link and a basic Crunchbase entry gave Google two external signals that the business was real. Within three months their domain started appearing in results for branded searches. Neither took more than 20 minutes to set up. For a solo business with no press coverage and no backlinks, these free profiles are the fastest path to establishing that you exist beyond your own website.
Content structure
Clear services page + honest bio + 3 targeted posts + free trust profiles
Results
Went from zero organic traffic to roughly 200 visits per month within 6 months. Two of the three blog posts are now cited by AI Overviews for their target queries.
Key lesson
You do not need a content team or a budget. You need one clear page per thing you do, a bio that names your expertise, and a handful of posts that answer the questions your clients actually ask.
