Lesson 4 of 7

Content Freshness and the Update Strategy

Publishing new content is only half the job. For many topics - software reviews, statistics, how-to guides for tools that change, and anything involving prices, laws or regulations - existing content decays. A guide that was accurate two years ago may now rank for a query and give wrong information, which damages both user trust and your site's signals.

Google gives ranking boosts to freshly updated content for queries where freshness matters. "Best CRM software 2026" rewards pages that have been updated recently and say so with a visible date. AI tools also factor recency into citation decisions - a page last updated in 2022 is less likely to be cited for a fast-moving topic than an equivalent page updated this quarter.

A practical update strategy: audit your top-ranking pages every six months. Update statistics, replace outdated tool recommendations, add any new sub-questions that have emerged in "People Also Ask," and change the visible date. This is one of the highest-ROI SEO activities available - you are improving existing rankings rather than starting from zero with new content.
