Lesson 2 of 7
Choosing the Right Content Format
The format of your content matters as much as the topic. A how-to guide, a listicle, a comparison article and a definition page are fundamentally different content types - and Google has learned which format best satisfies each type of . Publishing the wrong format for a query is one of the most common reasons well-written content fails to rank.
Informational queries ("how to," "what is," "why does") want guides, explainers and tutorials. Commercial queries ("best," "top," "vs") want comparison articles and ranked lists with clear recommendations. Transactional queries want product pages and landing pages, not blog posts. Before writing anything, check what format already dominates the top results for your target query - that is Google telling you what it expects.
For AEO and GEO, two formats perform especially well regardless of query type: definition pages (which answer "what is X" with structured, quotable clarity) and FAQ pages (which give AI tools a ready-made library of Q&A pairs to extract). Both formats should be part of every content strategy in 2026.
