Lesson 2 of 5

Prompt Decomposition: The Sub-Question Strategy

Tracking whether your brand appears in a specific AI prompt is useful but shallow. The real strategic question is: why does one source get cited and another does not? The answer usually comes down to sub-questions.

Every prompt an AI receives contains a chain of smaller questions it needs to answer internally before it can give a response. For example, the prompt "best AI visibility agency for a B2B SaaS company" requires the AI to first understand: what is AI visibility, why does it matter for B2B SaaS, what does this type of agency do, what signals indicate trustworthiness, and which sources on the web explain this topic clearly. If your content answers those sub-questions clearly and is structured so AI can extract the answers, you become a natural source to cite.

Practically, this means mapping the sub-questions underneath every topic you want to own, then making sure each sub-question has a clear, direct answer somewhere on your site. This is a content strategy, not a technical trick. It is the difference between asking "did ChatGPT mention us?" and asking "have we actually earned the right to be mentioned?"
